The deals: October on sale
The Independent’s October picks read like a sale rail. France: six days departing October 6 from £769pp (down from £949) — flights, transfers and breakfast included. Turkey: the Turquoise Coast in the mid-to-high 20s (True Blue Boutique Hotel, family-run, pool and sea views; Cachet seven nights B&B from October 12 at £1,225pp with flights and transfers). Cyprus: the October sun banker (23°C, eight sun hours — see our ranking). Portugal: October 24 departures from £1,298pp — flights, transfers, seven nights all-inclusive with tennis, golf lessons and yoga. Cornwall: Watergate Bay from £280/night B&B (coastal walks, indoor ocean-view pool, no cold-water swimming required). Splurge tier: South Africa + Mauritius safari-beach combos, Peru for the long-haul leap. The pattern: packaged October beats DIY October on the beach routes (operators bought summer allocations cheap); cities beat packages everywhere else. Book the package for sun, build your own for streets.

New city breaks: smaller is newer
TravelWeekly’s eight autumn launches share one logic: smaller cities, new flights, regional airports. Palermo (markets, cathedral, Palatine mosaics; Jet2 three nights from £779) — Sicily’s capital as shoulder-season city break. Tivat, Montenegro — the bay, the yachts without August, the mountains behind. Bratislava (Gothic, baroque and communist layers on the Danube; Tui five nights at £378pp with Ryanair flights from Edinburgh) — Europe’s most charming under-the-radar capital at back-row prices. Stuttgart (Mercedes and Porsche museums, Staatsgalerie, beer gardens; Eurowings direct from Gatwick until October 23; Fred Holidays four nights from £849 with both museums) — car culture plus high culture, bookable only while the route runs. The lesson: the new city break isn’t a new city — it’s a new flight. Watch regional schedules (Edinburgh, Manchester, Stansted, Gatwick) and the “new” list updates itself.
New routes: the autumn network
Euronews’s route roundup is the season’s infrastructure news. Air Canada: Toronto–Tenerife (Oct 25, twice weekly) and Montréal–Tenerife (Oct 31, Saturdays) — the only non-stops between North America and Tenerife. Edinburgh–Tromsø (easyJet, from Nov 30, Mon/Thu) — the first direct Scotland–northern Norway link, aurora season made one-hop. Glasgow–Krakow (from Nov 13, Mon/Fri) — Poland’s €68/day at direct-flight distance. Frankfurt–Agadir and Munich–Fès (late October) — Morocco’s autumn, including the only Munich–Fès direct. Finnair: Helsinki–Melbourne via Bangkok (Oct 25, daily) — the carrier’s first Australia flights, plus more Central Europe–Lapland winter directs. Lufthansa: Frankfurt–Kuala Lumpur (Oct 25) with Allegris first class; Munich gets Singapore, Washington DC and Cape Town in the premium cabin. Singapore Airlines: Singapore–Madrid via Barcelona (Oct 26, five-weekly) — 15th European destination. Plus Air France back to the Maldives (Dec 18, twice weekly to March) and Punta Cana tripled. New routes mean launch fares — the first six weeks of a route are routinely its cheapest. Fly the novelty.
Sun check + how to book it
October’s sun table still rules (Independent): Seville 24°C, Malta 25°C, Cyprus 23°C/8h, Rhodes 22°C/8h, Sardinia 18–22°C. Combine with the cost ranking (Cyprus €130/day, Malta €138, Czechia €124): sun + value in one trip. Book now: October packages (the £769 France won’t last), new-route launches (first-six-weeks fares), Halloween-adjacent cities (the 31st is Saturday — travel the weekends before). Book for November: Tromsø auroras (route opens Nov 30), Krakow value (route opens Nov 13), Christmas markets (openings late November). Tactics: midweek departures, Tuesday cheapest, packages for beaches, DIY for cities, regional airports for novelty. The shoulders fill in order — deals first, routes second, regrets last. October on sale, November on approach; the network grows while the crowds shrink. Go where the new flights go.
City details: the four launches
Palermo: markets (Ballarò, Vucciria), the cathedral’s mixed styles, Palatine Chapel mosaics, Mondello beach for the warm afternoons — three nights, Jet2 from £779, Manchester September. Street food over restaurants (arancine, panelle, sfincione); the old town walks itself. Tivat: the Bay of Kotor without August — Porto Montenegro’s yachts at anchor prices, Perast by boat, Lovćen switchbacks above. Quieter, cheaper, bluer. Bratislava: castle hill, Danube promenade, communist-era layers beside Gothic lanes — Tui five nights £378 with Ryanair from Edinburgh. Day-trip Vienna if you must (one hour by boat or train), but the city holds three days alone. Stuttgart: Mercedes and Porsche museums (book the Fred package with both entrances), Staatsgalerie (Picasso, Kandinsky), Rosenstein Palace, market hall sausages — four nights from £849, Eurowings Gatwick direct only until Oct 23, so the route is the deadline. Four cities, four new flights, one rule: go while the route is new — launch fares and empty sights travel together.
Sun table deep-dive
October’s warmth, ranked by the Independent’s numbers. Seville 24°C, seven sun hours: Europe’s hottest city break — Plaza de España, cathedral, tapas culture — the light is the sight. Malta 25°C: shoulder season, capital heat without summer’s furnace — Valletta’s streets, Mdina’s silence, Gozo by ferry. Cyprus 23°C, eight hours: the warmest swim (sea holds summer longest), Ayia Napa to Paphos, villages (Omodos, Lefkara) for culture between beaches. Rhodes 22°C, eight hours: Lindos village, the Colossus’s shadow, medieval old town. Sardinia 18–22°C: Alghero, Bosa, San Teodoro plus three national parks — the island for walkers who also swim. Beyond Europe: Hawaii’s Oahu at 29°C, Cape Town’s spring at 22°C. The rule: 20°C+ and six sun hours make October; everything above is bonus. Book the temperature, pack one layer, swim daily.
