September plants the flags; October holds the festivals. From the Prix de l’Arc to the Beaujolais countdown, via half a million grape-harvest revellers on the Butte, October is France’s densest events month. And this year’s edition runs from wine-fair shelves (starting today) to Taste Week tables. Here is the full calendar, with dates, places and booking logic.
From the field — Elena Marsh: Dates via keyqo wine-fairs calendar (Aug 2026), Mary Anne’s France October guide, Rick Steves festivals page, Lyon Tourist Office and goodlife France. Harvest note via wine-searcher (Sept 19). Companion: autumn short-breaks.
Week 1 (Oct 1-4): horses, fleas, Halloween eve
Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Oct 3-4 (Longchamp, Paris). Europe’s richest horse race weekend — fashion, hats, and the Sunday Arc itself. Book grandstand early; the free pelouse (infield) is the people’s Arc with screens, picnics and parade-ring views. RER C + shuttle, or the Bois de Boulogne walk.
Rederie d’Amiens, Oct 4. France’s second-biggest flea market after Lille: 5km of pavements, antiques to oddities. Arrive before 9am for the serious stalls; the afternoon is for browsing and fries. Direct trains from Paris-Nord (~1h10).
Halloween season opens (Oct 1). Disneyland Paris Halloween (to Nov 1) and Parc Astérix’s fear season switch on. See our Halloween guide for the full fear calendar.
Week 2 (Oct 7-11): Montmartre harvest + Honfleur scallops
Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre, Oct 7-11 (18th arrondissement). Five days, 500,000+ visitors, a working vineyard on the Butte, parades, concerts, tastings and fireworks. Our charter note stands: the joy here is landscape and craft. Vine rows above Paris rooftops, press demonstrations, grape-juice stands, the Clos-Montmartre cuvée as heritage, not indulgence. Go weekday mornings for the vineyard itself; evenings for concerts; Saturday for the parade. Metro Anvers/Abbesses/Pigalle — on foot from there, the Butte is the venue.
Fête de la Coquille et de la Pêche, Oct 10-11 (Honfleur, Normandy). Scallops and herring, cookery demos, craft stalls, ~100,000 tasters. Pair with the Honfleur harbour walk and the Sainte-Catherine wooden church. Trains to Deauville-Trouville + bus, or Rouen + coast road.
Week 3 (Oct 12-18): Taste Week + Motor Show
Semaine du Goût (Taste Week), Oct 12-18, nationwide. Cooking classes, school canteens turned tasting rooms, chef demos, market tours. In Paris and every region. The Lyon edition runs kids’ classes; tourist offices list local programmes. Book classes on day one of the announcement; the popular ones fill within days.
Paris Motor Show (Mondial de l’Auto), Oct 12-18, Porte de Versailles. Biennial, 1M+ visitors, every car imaginable. Weekday mornings for elbow room; the EV halls draw the longest queues. Metro 12 + tram T2/T3a.
The pairing writes itself: taste at lunch, motors in the afternoon — or reverse on weekends.
Week 4 (Oct 24-25): Chablis, then the countdown
Chablis Wine Festival, Oct 24-25 (Burgundy). Village-scale, cellar doors open, new-vintage tastings, the Serein valley in full autumn colour. Trains to Auxerre + bus; stay in Chablis or Noyers for the weekend.
Then the countdowns: Vignerons Indépendants salons — Clermont-Ferrand Oct 16-18, Lyon Oct 29-Nov 1 (Halle Tony Garnier), Reims Nov 6-9, Lille Nov 13-16, Paris Dec 10-13 (Porte de Versailles). Meet growers, taste with the people who pressed it (our landscape-and-craft lens applies throughout). Beaujolais Nouveau, Nov 19 (third Thursday) — midnight openings, Lyon’s all-night party.
Two absences to note: no Bordeaux Fête le Vin in 2026 (cancelled, budget reasons — back 2027). And Bordeaux’s own harvest made history as the hottest vintage since 1893 (wine-searcher). A talking point, not a tasting note.

Getting around in October: trains, strikes, works
October is works season on French rails — and this year, strike season too. The playbook from our strike survival guide applies domestically: check SNCF and RATP apps the morning of travel, prefer early TGVs, keep a FlixBus alternative for sub-3-hour hops (Paris-Amiens, Paris-Rouen-Honfleur, Paris-Auxerre all have coach backups). Event weekends compress trains — Arc weekend, Montmartre weekend. So book seats the moment dates firm up. And never plan a same-day flight home after an evening event. The RER C serves Longchamp best on race days with reinforced service. Honfleur and Chablis need the Friday-night arrival to own the Saturday.
The foires aux vins (starting today)
The autumn supermarket wine fairs are the quiet giant of the season. And they start today, September 22 (Aldi, Système U to Oct 4, Carrefour to Oct 18), with E.Leclerc Sept 29-Oct 11 and Nicolas/Intermarché/Monoprix/Cdiscount already running. How to work them: check the French press picks (Le Figaro, Que Choisir and specialist juries publish selections), buy mid-range bottles from good vintages, avoid the trophy-bottle scrum. For travellers: Monoprix City and Carrefour City stock fair selections in central Paris. Souvenirs that pack flat and cost little. (Charter: we cover the retail ritual and regional craft, never drinking promotion.)
Beyond the month: the November bridge
October’s calendar flows straight into November’s rituals. Beaujolais Nouveau arrives November 19 (third Thursday) — Lyon’s all-night tastings, midnight openings nationwide, the year’s most social wine night. The Vignerons Indépendants salons continue (Reims Nov 6-9, Lille Nov 13-16, Paris Dec 10-13) for direct-from-grower tastings through autumn’s end. And the foires aux vins shelves empty into Christmas selections. Buy October’s picks now, drink them at the November table. October plans the season; November drinks it.
Booking logic for the month
Arc + Montmartre weekends: book trains and stays now (October Paris weekends compress with Fashion Week spillover Sept 28-Oct 6). Taste Week classes: book on announcement. Motor Show: weekday mornings, tickets online. Honfleur/Chablis: the Saturday is the day — arrive Friday night. Vignerons salons: afternoon sessions are calmer than openings. And everywhere: the RATP/SNCF apps the morning of travel — October works continue.
