Why is it falling? US-Iran energy shock fades
Inflation spiked to 4.2% in May after US-Iran war energy shock, then eased on ceasefire: energy +15.7% in June vs +23.5% May, gasoline monthly -2.9% in July. June CPI even fell -0.4% MoM, largest drop since April 2020, first monthly drop since May 2020.
But base effects remain brutal: +24.6% gas YoY means the level is still painful even as the rate cools.

Real impact on your wallet in 5 items
1. Rent +3.2% = two-thirds of monthly rise
Shelter +0.1% MoM drove the +0.1% headline. Owners equivalent rent sticky. Movers face 3%+ renewals.
2. Groceries +3%
Food at home +0.1% MoM. Eggs -25.7% YoY but +4% MoM rebound, dairy up. Stock non-perishables on promo.
3. Gas: -2.9% in July but +24.6% on year
Monthly relief at pump and lower jet fuel / airfares, but annual fill-up still +quarter. Shift fill-ups, combine trips.
4. Cars and flights
New / used cars ticked up slightly, apparel and furnishings up. Airfares likely down with jet fuel. Good window to book fall travel.
5. Real wage -0.2%
Average hourly earnings -0.2% YoY per BLS. Paychecks lose to 3.4% headline. Renegotiate insurance, subscriptions, bank fees this week.
Core vs headline: why the Fed watches 2.5%
Headline swings with gas. Core ex-food-energy at 2.5% YoY (+0.2% MoM) shows sticky services. Morgan Stanley’s Ellen Zentner: in-line inflation keeps no-hike narrative intact after weak July jobs (-23k jobs).
Fed quote in focus: longer we wait to bring inflation back to 2%, more expensive for Americans. Hold in September is base case unless August surprises.
Traveling on a budget while inflation runs hot

3 anti-inflation actions this week
- Delay full tank if possible, track local spread (gas -2.9% MoM trend).
- Bulk pantry + freeze, target unit price not brand.
- Call insurer / bank: 15-min calls beat 0.2% wage drag.

Read August with your real basket, not the index basket
The headline tells an economic story; your own basket tells a different one. July’s 3.4% year-over-year CPI rests on weights drawn from the average American’s spending — rent is two-thirds of the monthly rise, and energy and food follow gas. If your household doesn’t spend like the average — two cars, a lease renewal this fall, or a big weekly grocery run — your reading should start with the rows that hit you, not with the headline.
| What hits you | What to check in August data | Your same-day move |
|---|---|---|
| Lease renewal | Primary rent (+3.2% y/y July) and renewal trends | Negotiate before the date, lock a year if you can |
| Long commutes | Fuel (+39.1% y/y July) with possible autumn relief | Batch errands and time the tank refill |
| Big grocery list | Food (+3% y/y) with volatile eggs | Shop unit price, freeze on promo days |
| Paycheck vs CPI | Real wages (-0.2% July) | Call insurer and bank this week, not next month |
Answered, that becomes three release-morning checks: does August lock the September hold or reopen the debate? Do gas moves reorder the board up or down? Does the wage hit on a basket like yours outweigh the headline? If the answers favor the hold and gas steadies month over month, treat it as a rare relief window — route the first 20% of any planned extra spend into savings instead of the shopping cart.
📍 Keep this table next to your cart: you don’t need to master every number at release, only to start with the row matching your biggest household cost and walk away with one decision per family.
